Cannes Trends: It's the economy stupid!

Though my arrival in Cannes Friday morning may be belated, it’s already clear what the dominant thematic trend of the festival is: The global financial crisis! Turns out reporting for the Wall Street Journal Online has its benefits this year: I’ve already reported on the economic concerns at the opening “Robin Hood” press conference (“rob the rich, give to the poor,” right?) and today, there’s my interview with Charles Ferguson, who returns to the documentary scene after his Iraq report “No End in Sight” with “Inside Job,” a look at the causes of the financial crisis. Upon arrival in Cannes, I’ll be zooming over to the “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” press conference for more of the same. It might not be as sexy as rape and death — past themes at the festival — but it sure is timely.
