Cinema Guild Takes “Putty Hill”

Cinema Guild Takes "Putty Hill"

The Cinema Guild has announced the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights to Matt Porterfield’s “Putty Hill,” which had its world premiere earlier this year at the Berlin International Film Festival and its North American premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival the following month. The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey of The Cinema Guild with Kimberly M. Jaime, Esq. on behalf of the filmmakers. “Putty Hill” will open in theaters this fall.

“Releasing films like ‘Putty Hill’ is what we’re in business for,” commented Ryan Krivoshey, in a statement. “With only his second feature, Matt has crafted an achingly beautiful and wholly original film that ranks with the best of recent American cinema. We’re very excited for audiences to discover the immense pleasures of ‘Putty Hill.'”

The film as described by The Cinema Guild:

“On the eve of a funeral for one of their friends, neighbors and family members gather to commemorate his life. Their shared memories paint a portrait of a community hanging in the balance, skewed by poverty, city living, and a generational divide, united in their pursuit of a new American Dream.”

Director Porterfield studied film at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and teaches screenwriting and production in the Film & Media Studies Program at Johns Hopkins University. His first feature, “Hamilton,” which follows two summer days in the life of a young family, was released theatrically in 2006, and in an additional deal, was picked up for DVD/VOD rights by The Cinema Guild as part of the “Putty” deal. “Hamilton” will be released on DVD in early 2011.

Matt Porterfield said in a statement: “I’m ecstatic that ‘Putty Hill’ has found a home at Cinema Guild. They have a world-class catalogue and a history of finding audiences for inspired, eclectic, visionary films. The fact that ‘Hamilton’ will now see its much-anticipated DVD release is icing on the cake.”
