Lorber Films Croons to Hot Docs' "Socalled Movie"

Doc “The ‘Socalled’ Movie” has been picked up by Lorber Films. Directed by Garry Beitel, the film is having its North American debut at Hot Docs in Toronto, currently underway. The National Film Board of Canada’s Christina Rogers negotiated the deal with Elizabeth Sheldon, Vice President of Kino Lorber, Inc.. The film will be touring the festival circuit and will be released theatrically in the summer of 2010.

“The ‘Socalled’ Movie” is described as a “a kaleidoscopic portrait of Socalled, aka Josh Dolgin, the multidisciplinary artist and musician whose fusion of klezmer, hip-hop, and funk has been hailed as a new high in multicultural art and music. His music video debut ‘You Are Never Alone’ has garnered 2 million views on YouTube.”

Set in Socalled’s Montreal neighborhood (as well as in New York, France and Ukraine), where Hasidic Jews and young artists crowd the sidewalks, the film samples the artist’s work and examines his collaborative and multi-faceted artistic process in 18 segments.

“‘The ‘Socalled’ Movie’ is a portrait of an eclectic artist who through a totally original synthesis of sound inspires and brings together diverse audiences,” commented Sheldon in a statement. “His cult status is reflected in his online stardom and we promise to build on it by bringing his story to new audiences in theaters, on DVD and across digital platforms.”

Upcoming releases include “Two in the Wave,” Emmanuel Laurent’s inquiry into the lives and friendship of New Wave godfathers Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard; “Army of Crime,” Robert Robert Guediguian’s World War II drama about immigrant resistance fighters in Nazi-occupied France; and, “Nobody’s Perfect,” a feature documentary by Niko von Glasow and winner of 2009 German Film Award for Best Documentary.
