One Week Before the Festival, Large Waves Attack Cannes

A freak storm brought large waves of water to the Croisette just one week before the start of the Cannes Film Festival in Southern France. Yesterday’s unexpected storm has caused considerable damage, according to numerous media reports from France.

TV network France24 reported waves as high as 33 feet along the coastline in Cannes and nearby Nice.

“In Cannes, some 20 restaurants were damaged and several cars overturned,” France24 said in a report today.

Damage in Cannes could run into the millions of Euros, the Deputy Mayor of the seaside Festival town said in a Guardian report today.

“We are lost for words. [The waves] came very quickly,” said one Cannes beach owner quoted in the Guardian, “It was calm and then suddenly it started and we didn’t have time to prepare.”

Some festival attendees will be arriving in the city in the coming days and over the weekend with many industry attendees setting up shop as early as Monday on the Croisette in Cannes.

“We will need several days to clean up,” city official David Lisnard told the BBC, “but it should all be ready on time.” [Eugene Hernandez]
