Cannes Winner "Screaming Man" Picked Up For U.S.

Film Movement has announced their acquisition of Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s “A Screaming Man,” which won the Jury Prize from the 2010 Cannes Film Festival last month. The film – picked up in association with UK distributor Soda Pictures – will be released in North America in the first quarter of 2011, while Soda Pictures will oversee distribution in the UK and Ireland, premiering the film at the London Film Festival in October 2010. The film will be released theatrically, followed by a Cable VOD run.

“I have long respected UK distributor Soda Pictures, and am very happy to have partnered with them to acquire what we feel was one of the strongest entries in this year’s Cannes Official Competition. Mahamat-Saleh Haroun is a leading figure in contemporary African cinema, and Film Movement is honored to bring his latest effort to North American screens,” said Film Movement President Adley Gartenstein, in a statement.

The film as described by Film Movement:

“Adam, a 60-something former swimming champion, is a pool attendant at a hotel in Chad. When the hotel gets taken over by new Chinese owners, he is forced to give up his job to his son, Abdel, leaving Adam humiliated and resentful. Meanwhile the country is in the throes of civil war. Rebel forces attack the government while the authorities demand the population to contribute to the ‘war effort,’ with money or volunteers old enough to fight. The District Chief constantly harasses Adam for his contribution. But Adam is penniless; he only has his son. In a moment of weakness, Adam makes a decision that he will forever regret.”

The deal was negotiated between Pyramide’s Head of Sales, Yoann Ubermulhin, Film Movement President, Adley Gartenstein and Soda Pictures Managing Director, Edward Fletcher.
