Celebrity PR at the NBA Finals

Celebrity PR at the NBA Finals

Major sports games bring out the fans from all kinds of industries, but when you mix a summer television event with big ratings and upcoming entertainment releases, forget buying commercials! A much more effective means to promoting an upcoming movie or album can be scoring great seats for your talent. This was pretty apparent during Thursday’s Game One of the NBA Finals. Granted, the L.A. Lakers are one of the teams competing for the title, so it’s likely that some famous Hollywood residents, are rooting for them (Jack Nicholson and Lou Adler get a pass). But a few of these photo ops feel a little more strategic (I’ve added captions that suggest what they’re trying to communicate):

(“Don’t forget, folks, Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables opens in August. Just to make sure you don’t forget, that’s the film’s producer Avi Lerner, on the left.”)

(“Not only is the band Red Hot Chili Pepppers still together, but they have a new album due this Fall.”)

(“The cast of Grown Ups, opening June 25, really are friends!”)

There will surely be more of this, as the series continues this week. Ironically, the celebrity photo from Thursday’s game that garnered the most attention on Friday, was a playful kiss between two actual friends: Dustin Hoffman and Jason Bateman. I don’t think they were promoting anything, unless we can expect a pending DVD reissue of Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium.
