Election Day Doc "11/4/08" Picked Up By FilmBuff

Jeff Deutchman’s documentary “11/4/08” has been acquired by VOD-based distributor FilmBuff for an October 2010 release, it was announced today. The news came as the film – which premiered at SXSW earlier this year – has its first official New York screening tonight, as part of the Stranger than Fiction series at the IFC Center. The feature-length film was created with footage that Deutchman collected from filmmakers around the globe, captured during the day Barack Obama was elected President of the United States of America: November 4, 2008. In cities such as Chicago, Paris, Dubai, New Orleans, Berlin, and New Delhi, filmmakers Henry Joost (“Catfish”), Margaret Brown (“The Order of Myths”), Joe Swanberg (“Alexander the Last”), Benh Zeitlin (“Glory At Sea”) contributed stories and images for what transpired on that day. indieWIRE‘s Brian Brooks profiled Deutchman and the film a few weeks back.

“Jeff’s documentary project is not only a compelling film, but also a wonderfully clever example of interactive storytelling through new media,” says FilmBuff Head of Programming Matt Dentler, in a statement. “It feels appropriate to release the film in this interactive manner, across digital platforms.”

The film will be released on various VOD platforms in the middle of October, after a one-day theatrical event that will include screenings at the Philadelphia Film Festival, the Hawaii International Film Festival, the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, various Emerging Cinemas locations around the country, and venues to be announced. The film’s website, 11-4-08.com, is already an available resource where anyone can upload footage shot on Election Day 2008 and contribute to the ongoing project.

“I’m thrilled to be collaborating with FilmBuff to get this film seen on screens of all sizes as the country prepares for the upcoming midterm election,” Deutchman said in a statement. “My hope is that the images and emotions captured in 11/4/08 may serve to remind people why they should go out to the polls. I’m also ecstatic to have such great exhibitors and film festivals on board as we take the day-and-date-with-festival model to the next level.”

Film Buff plans to release it onto various different VOD platforms, throughout the year and into 2011. The launch in October will coincide with the national midterm elections. The film was produced by Deutchman and Natalie Difford.
