Richard Shepard’s “I Knew It Was You” will get a DVD release thanks to a deal struck by the director and Oscilloscope Laboratories. The film, which profiles the relatively unknown actor John Cazale (Fredo in “The Godfather”), whose only five film roles were in titles nominated for Best Picture Oscars, premiered at Sundance in 2009 and aired on HBO last month. The film features interviews with the Hollywood royalty that worked with Cazale on “The Godfather,” “The Godfather: Part II,” “The Conversation,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” and “The Deer Hunter” as well as a younger generation of actors who admired his work. It charts the actor’s history throughout his film roles to his untimely death and unwritten history.
On news of the DVD release, Shepard noted, “It’s a thrill to have Oscilloscope release the DVD of ‘I Knew It Was You.’ Their passion and commitment to quality projects is evident in the care and creativity they put into each of their releases. This documentary was a labor of love for everyone involved, and it’s really nice that it continues with the DVD release. I’m very excited that movie fans everywhere will have a chance to learn about John Cazale, and his incredible craft of acting.”
