Strand to Open "The Purple Sea" Stateside

After a summer screening schedule that includes all of the big stops on the U.S. LGBT film festival circuit, Strand Releasing will take Donatella Maiorca’s Italian lesbian period piece “The Purple Sea” to theaters in late fall. Strand picked up all U.S. rights to the film, which will screen at New York’s Newfest, San Francisco’s Frameline, and Los Angeles’s Outfest. The film premiered at the Rome Film Festival last fall.

Based on a true story and adapted from Giacomo Pilati’s novel, the film tells the 19th Century story of Angela, a tomboy living by the water in Sicily. After falling in love with her best friend Sara, her father forces her to marry one of his employees. After being locked away for her actions, it is up to Angela and her mother to develop a plan of acceptance.

Jon Gerrans of Strand Releasing and Jef Nuyts of Intra Movies negotiated the deal.
