Oscar-nominated actress Gloria Stuart will celebrate her 100th birthday in grand style this summer. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced late last week that in honor if her centennial celebration, they will host a program on July 22 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, with film clips from Stuart’s long career and a conversation between Stuart and her longtime friend, Leonard Maltin.
Stuart made history in 1997, when at the age of 87 she became the oldest performer to have been nominated for an Academy Award for her supporting role in James Cameron’s “Titanic.” Long before Cameron’s opus ever came to be, Stuart had been working in musicals, theater and film since 1930. She made her debut in 1932’s “Street of Women,” and from then on appeared in James Whale’s “The Invisible Man,” John Ford’s “Air Mail” and in “Poor Little Rich Girl” alongside Shirley Temple.
Stuart remains the sole surviving board member of the Screen Actors Guild from the 30’s, which she joined in 1933.
Tickets to “An Academy Centennial Celebration with Gloria Stuart” are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students.
