Verdi’s SIMON BOCCANEGRA, the second program in this summer’s Opera on Film series at Enzian, hits the big screen on Saturday, 7/17, at 12 noon. As Matt Palm wrote in his Friday Orlando Sentinel Calendar column under the headline, “Politics, poison–and popcorn,” “Set in 14th-century Italy, it’s a twisted story of love, secret indentities and vengeance.” Beautifully shot at the legendary La Scala theater in Milan, what makes this particular production doubly interesting for both buffs and novices alike is the fact that it’s the first opera in 3+ seasons of screenings at Enzian to star the one and only Placido Domingo. Not only is he one of “The Three Tenors” and perhaps the most famous living opera singer, but as the lead character in SIMON BOCCANEGRA, he is singing a baritone role and pullls it off magnificently.
