Elephant Eye has picked up U.S. rights to Los Angeles and Woodstock film festival-winner, “Prince of Broadway,” by Sean Baker. As part of the deal, Oscar-nominated director, Lee Daniels (“Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire”) will help promote the film to audiences.
The film will open September 3rd at New York’s Angelika Film Center followed by a September 17th opening at the Laemmle Sunset Five in Los Angeles with other markets to follow.
“‘Prince of Broadway’ is the story of Lucky, a charismatic hustler eking out a living in the underbelly of New York’s wholesale fashion district. An illegal immigrant from Ghana, Lucky makes ends meet by soliciting shoppers on the street with knock-off brand merchandise. Life is good for Lucky, but his big dreams are suddenly upended when a child is thrust into his world by a woman who insists the toddler is his son.
“‘Prince of Broadway’ is powerful and raw. I felt like I was watching someone’s real life unfold right before my eyes. Sean Baker’s movie is a tour de force,” said Daniels in a statement. “Sean Baker’s inspirational approach to moviemaking marries old school guerilla feel with fresh, emotional direction. It has been such a pleasure to be a part of this film and work with the team that has been assembled to get this great movie out into the marketplace,” added Elephant Eye principals Kim Jose and David Robinson.
In related news, New York-based Elephant Eye also recently picked up rights to Kim Chaprion’s drama, “Dog Pound,” which screened in competition at the recent Tribeca Film Festival. The film centers on three juvenile delinquents who arrive at a correctional center and are put under the care of an experienced guard.
In a href=”https://www.indiewire.com/article/tribeca_review_breathless_vanity_kim_chapirons_dog_pound/” TARGET=”_blank”>his review during Tribeca about the film, Eric Kohn noted “Dog Pound,” “puts both private and personal surfaces under the microscope, stealthily revealing its characters’ internal flaws and the inability of the correctional process to address them.”
