Edward Burn’s latest, “Nice Guy Johnny,” which played at this year’s Tribeca, will be released on October 26 through FilmBuff, an affiliate of Cinetic Rights Management. In an interesting move, Burns who will continue to tour the film to festivals nationally throughout 2010, selected a multiplatform distribution over a traditional theatrical release. FilmBuff will therefore release the film simultaneously on iTunes, Amazon.com, VOD and DVD.
“Ed is one of the true pioneers when you talk about filmmakers who embrace digital distribution,” said Matt Dentler of FilmBuff in a press release. “We’re excited to be working with him on ‘Nice Guy Johnny,’ and bringing it to audiences through various platforms all at the same time.”
Burns said he went with this deal in an effort to retain full creative control, and control of the distribution rights.
“Furthermore,” Burns added, “the economics are much more attractive than a theatrical release for a film of this size. Now when someone asks, ‘where can I see your movie if I don’t live near an arthouse theatre?’ I tell them, ‘anywhere you want.”
