“The Housemaid,” a remake of the 1960 Korean film of the same name, has been picked up for North American release by IFC Films. Billed as an “erotic thriller,” Im Sang-soo’s film made its world premiere in competition at Cannes this year. IFC plans on screening “The Housemaid” at film festivals in the fall in anticipation of a commercial release early next year.
“The Housemaid” charts the affair between an extremely wealthy man and the young maid hired to take care of his pregnant wife. When the family’s social order is disturbed, “all hell breaks loose,” according to IFC Entertainment. “The Housemaid” is Im Sang-soo’s sixth film as director and writer. His other films include “Girls Night Out” and “A Good Lawyer’s Wife,” which was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2003.
“’The Housemaid’ is one of the most sheerly entertaining and sexy thrillers we have seen in years,” said IFC Entertainment President Jonathan Sehring in a statement. “It establishes Im Sang-soo as a major filmmaker and reconfirms that some of the best filmmaking anywhere in the world is happening in South Korea.”
Arianna Bocco and Jeff Deutchman of IFC Films negotiated the deal with Jason Chae and Erica Nam of Mirovision, producers of the film.
