Oscar-nominee Casey Affleck’s directorial debut “I’m Still Here” has been picked up by Magnolia Pictures for worldwide distribution. Magnolia plans to release the film on September 10th.
Affleck’s debut is a documentary that chronicles a year in the life of actor Joaquin Phoenix (“Walk the Line”), when he announced his retirement from the film industry and set out to reinvent himself as a hip hop musician. The film is billed by Magnolia as “funny, sometimes shocking, and always riveting.”
It’s interesting to note that Affleck is Phoenix’s brother in law, and that it was Phoenix who approached Affleck to document his tumultuous year. It remains to be seen whether the film is a truthful depiction of an artist at a crossroads or a mockumentarty-style hoax. Whatever the case, the film seems primed for controversy.
