“Today’s Special,” a comedy about a family-run Indian restaurant in Queens, has been acquired by Reliance MediaWorks for nationwide release on Oct. 8.
The film is based on Aasif Mandvi’s one-man play “Sakina’s Restaurant,” and stars Mandvi in the role of an up-and-coming chef forced to take over his family’s nearly bankrupt restaurant. David Kaplan (“Year of the Fish”) directs from a screenplay co-written by Mandvi and “Late Night with Jimmy Kimmel” scribe Jonathan Bines. The film, a prize-winner at the Palm Spring International Film Festival, is the first feature film production of Inimitable Pictures. [Micah Sachs]
