Venice has announced the rest of its line-up. Besides Darren Aronofsky’s opener Black Swan (in competition) and the closer from Julie Taymor, The Tempest (out of competition), the fest is world premiering a number of North American titles. As expected the competition entries include Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, Julian Schnabel’s Miral, and Richard Lewis’s Barney’s Version, a rare debut for a Canadian film in Venice.
Stars who will likely turn up for this fest, which runs September 1 through 11, include Natalie Portman, Dustin Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Helen Mirren, Stephen Dorff, Joaquin Phoenix, Jon Hamm, Blake Lively, Vincent Cassel, Gérard Depardieu, Catherine Deneuve, Judith Godrèche, Willem Dafoe, Freida Pinto, Vanessa Redgrave, Djimon Honsou, Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, among others.

Other American competition entries are Promises Written in Water, a follow-up to Brown Bunny from Vincent Gallo, Road to Nowhere from Monte Hellman, and Meek’s Cutoff, from Kelly Reichardt. Out-of-competition showings are Ben Affleck’s The Town and his brother Casey’s mock-doc I’m Still Here: the Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix, A Letter to Elia, a doc about Elia Kazan from Martin Scorsese and Kent Jones, and Passione, an Italian film about the music of Naples from American actor-writer-director John Turturro.
The fest jury is led by Quentin Tarantino, who is presumably quite happy that there’s a midnight screening of his buddy Robert Rodriguez’s actioner Machete, as well as a well-deserved lifetime achievement Golden Lion going to Hong Kong helmer John Woo.
