American Express has announced the five finalists for the first round of its “My Movie Pitch” competition, which will culminate in one pitch being turned into a short film by a “celebrated independent filmmaker,” according to a release from American Express. The winning film will debut at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival.
“My Movie Pitch” solicits 60-second online video pitches for film ideas from the public, with the five finalists from round one and the five finalists from round two receiving a laptop computer, movie editing software and a portable video camera. Aspiring filmmakers can continue to submit their pitches in round two through September 15. From September 16 through October 15, the public will have an opportunity to vote on the 10 finalist pitches at amexfilm.com.
The five first-round pitches are: “Gesundheit,” a disaster movie about sneezing; “Mr. Stache,” a drama featuring a man and his mustache; Ms. Spring 101’s “Psychic,” a comedy about a psychic who foresees the future of marriages; sci-fi thriller “Doppleganger”; and “Chalklines.”
“From psychics to sneezing, we received a wide variety of unique and quirky movie pitches through American Express’ My Movie Pitch,’ said Jessica Igoe, director of global sponsorship marketing for American Express. “These five wildly different submissions quickly became viral sensations with fans on our site.” [by Micah Sachs]
