Bye Bye Blogs: Denton's Gawker No Longer Blog Network

Nick Denton, the snarky Brit who pioneered successful blogging at the mighty Gawker Media blog network is leaving the format behind, mainly because Gawker has outgrown blog software’s limitations. (I must say, a scan of Gawker’s entertaining headlines is a reminder of what works on the web.) Finally, giving big stories more play for longer periods of time works better than letting them move down in the ever-refreshing blog feed–and helps to lure the website holy grail: new reader regulars. “The relentless pace of news has overwhelmed the blog format of old. Interesting news gets buried as new headlines flow onto the page,” writes Valleywag of the redesign.

That’s one reason why TOH is housed at the busy indieWIRE site, where the top stories can get some front-page play–in fact, indieWIRE is undergoing a facelift to make that even more the case.
