Close Encounters of the Daft Punk Kind

Everyone is super excited that Daft Punk is composing the score for “Tron: Legacy,” which comes out in December. What if they also did the music for other returns to old sci-fi movies. Say…“Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” for example? There’s not likely to ever be a sequel to that one, but Steven Spielberg has recut the 1977 film before so maybe he could re-release it with a new score by the electronic music duo replacing the Oscar-nominated original by John Williams. No, that would never happen, either, but thanks to the power of some YouTube users we can at least see what that would look like. Check out a clip of the climactic light & sound communication sequence featuring Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” blaring from the mothership below:

The mash-up might have been inspired by the duo’s reworking of Williams’ iconic theme as an introduction piece at their live shows a few years back:

And here’s a hardly related mash-up trailer for “Free Willy” that makes the movie seem more like a “Jaws” knockoff. Actually, it’s kind of like “Jaws 3.” Anyway, I love these genre-swapping mash-up trailers and hadn’t seen any in a while, so despite the fact that I’ve never seen ‘Free Willy” I’m into this:
