Ex-Warner Independent Picture executives Paul Federbush and Laura Kim, along with New York-based partner Ron Stein (one of the financiers and exec producers of Lisa Cholodenko’s “The Kids Are All Right”), launched the new distribution company, Red Flag Releasing, at Sundance 2010 with the acquisition of “8: The Mormon Proposition.” The doc was released in June day-and-date theatrical and VOD, and grossed just over $100,000. The DVD and digital platforms are currently performing strongly buoyed by the Prop 8 trial. Red Flag is committed to finding a sustainable model for an indie distribution company that can operate with agility and innovation, taking advantage of every available platform to customize a release that is organic to the needs of each film.
Types of films in distributor’s slate:
We love and are interested in all kinds of movies.
Advice for filmmakers:
In many ways, today filmmakers have a greater variety of distribution options than ever — from old model full-service distributor to DIY, and different a la carte options in between. It can get confusing, so prep before the festival by researching your various options, get an experienced sales/distribution rep before the festival if possible, and go with distributors you trust. Deal points are important, but not as important as a distributor’s enthusiasm and ability to get your film out there. Consider some viable self-distribution plans in case distributors don’t come forward, keeping in mind, however, that most sales happen after the festival.
