It’s not news that Eli Roth is planning a feature-length horror film based on his satirical trailer from “Grindhouse,” titled “Thanksgiving,” but while another such spin-off/adaptation is about to hit theaters — Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete” — it’s the perfect time for an update on the status of the proposed holiday-themed slasher flick. While talking to Cinema Blend in part to promote “The Last Exorcism,” he confirmed that it’s still happening, though after a year it’s still in the early scripting stage:
I’ve been working on the script with my co-writer, Jeff Rendell, who plays the pilgrim in the trailer. And it’s me imitating Jeff’s voice [for the narration]. But Jeff has been working. I said that his deal is he has to work on the script while I’m promoting The Last Exorcism, and as soon as I’m done in mid-September he’s going to fly to California, we’re going to sit down, and bang out the script.
I’d assume they’re going to wait and see how “Machete” does, but then that film went ahead in spite of the lackluster box office for “Grindhouse” and also “Thanksgiving” would likely do as well as any Roth-directed film, whatever its basis. As usual, thinking about features stretched out of initially jokey movie trailers has me wondering about other such parodies being adapted. This time my pondering is focused on the fake movies tied to “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” the financial failure of which is comparable to that of Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s homage to ’70s B-movies.
I wonder what would be more plausible now, that Edgar Wright could also follow suit with a feature-length version of his fake “Grindhouse” trailer, for “Don’t,” or if someone could do a similar spin-off adapted from one of the fake Lucas Lee (Chris Evans) posters tied to “Scott Pilgrim.” After he does “Captain America,” Evans might just have enough appeal to get one off the ground. I vote for “The Game is Over 2.” It might confuse people with that title, about as much as “Leonard Pt. 6” did long ago, but how can you resist that tagline: “One Good Cop … Is Finished … Fooling Around … Again”?
