Werner Herzog Answers Twitter Questions

First Look Studios set up a Werner Herzog video press conference and asked him, in order, questions posed to him on Twitter, then posted the individual answers on YouTube.

Because the folks who follow @1stlookstudios are more cinephile than the average, I’d say this turned out pretty well. Yes, Herzog wanted to kill Klaus Kinski: “I would have loved to kill him cowardly from behind with a snow shovel. At the same time he was plotting to kill me. At the same time we have a wonderful friendship…those were the good times.” I loved the section where he asks the videographers who Chuck Norris is and they try to explain the made-up online feud between them. He gives advice about marriage and describes himself as good at playing a bad-ass on camera, but a “very fluffy husband.” His advice to teenagers: “read, read, read, don’t watch too much internet and TV, because those who spend too much time there lose the world and those who read gain it.”

First Look is promoting the DVD release of My Son, My Son What Have Ye Done? (which I never saw); my @akstanwyck question was about Nic Cage and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (his answer is below).

Herzog is one of those people–like Errol Morris or David Lynch, who he admires (announced today as guest director of the upcoming AFI Fest)–who gives good quote. He is, on some level, an instinctive performer, and is often hired by other directors an actor (check out Zak Penn’s hilarious mock-dock Incident at Loch Ness).

Sharing a meal with him is another matter. Like many directors, when not performing, he’s expounding on what he takes seriously for an eager receptive audience.
