One Big Reason To Go See "Going The Distance"

Alright, so I’ve yet to see “Going The Distance,” the Drew Barrymore-Justin Long romantic comedy that opens today. But it’s been on my agenda to do so opening night since February. Because “Going The Distance” kind of saved my ass, at least indirectly. And I’d say that’s enough to already offer it as a recommendation.

Basically, as documented on this blog at the time, my trip to Los Angeles was problematized earlier this year when I became the victim of an elaborate craigslist scam. Long story short: An apartment I’d already paid for didn’t actually exist, and my friend and I were stranded and broke in the City of Angels. I blogged the short story long, and somehow that blog entry found its way to a screenwriter who messaged me saying he wanted to help out. But my friend and I were exactly feeling trusting of strangers at the time and assumed it was some sort of scam. Then another message came saying that a hotel room had been fully paid for in my name and we could just show up. Fully expecting someone to be lurking under the bed, we showed up… But there was no lurker. Then our new friend suggested we go for a beer, and we fully expected to be abducted and murdered. But, nope, the guy turned out to be incredibly nice, humble and personable, and it officially became clear there were so strings attached to this situation. He wasn’t even the type that seemed to be doing it in this self-serving, pat-himself-in-the-back kind of way. He simply explained someone had done something like this for him in the past, and that our only requirements in accepting his amazing generosity was to one day “pay it forward.” This entry is not the paying it forward (that will come someday), it is simply a seven-month-later thank you to Geoff LaTulippe, who I’m quite certain is the nicest guy who ever lived. He also – as I’m sure you’ve figured out – is the writer of “Going The Distance,” his first produced feature screenplay. The film is getting some great reviews and I’m sure it would make a welcome addition to your Labour Day weekend. If only because you’re supporting the work of one of the good guys.
