Portman Gaining on Gravity, Sex and the City's Cattrall and Noth Attack Critics

Alfonso Cuaron is in “active negotiations” with Natalie Portman to star in Gravity after failed attempts by Universal and Warner Bros. to keep Angelina Jolie interested. Nor did Blake Lively or Scarlett Johansson gain serious traction. And an attempt to push Sandra Bullock also came to naught. The role will be a challenge; it might as well be the industry’s current prima ballerina. Cuaron wrote the script with his son Jonas, whose Hollywood Gang-produced script for a Mexico City-based thriller was also just picked up by Warners.

Sex and the City 2 stars Chris Noth and Kim Cattrall are not happy about the way the media treated their summer sequel (which grossed a boffo $95 million domestic and $193 million overseas). Noth tells NYMag that the franchise, in which he played Mr. Big, is “dead,” and “the press killed it. Your magazine fucking killed it. New York Magazine.” Before asking for a piece of gum to clean his dirty mouth, Noth beats his point to death, claiming that the press, in cahoots, decided the franchise needed to go. Clearly there are no hard feelings.

As Cattrall was leaving a NYC restaurant shortly after the film’s release, she defended the film as “never meant to be a critics’ movie,” adding: “some people” need to “get a life.” Prepping for her role as Cleopatra for director pal Janet Suzman at the Liverpool Playhouse’s production of Antony and Cleopatra (October 8 – November 13), Cattrall spoke to The Guardian, which defended her Sex and the City accomplishments. Of the gal pals, Cattrall “was the funniest and least neurotic of the four, and by far the most accomplished actor, sympathetically showing her character enduring the indignities of the menopause and overcoming cancer.” That’s debatable.
