The 2010 New York Film Festival | Frederick Wiseman

Part two of the New York Film Festival’s non-fiction day of press screenings was Frederick Wiseman’s Boxing Gym, another in the master’s corpus of films about the functioning of institutions and, like so many of his previous works, the way in which (in this case ritualized) violence operates in society. Wiseman chatted with the press and the Film Society’s Richard Peña after the screening in a very informal and conversational session; completely charming, yet self-assured and clear about his choices. I was really tickled by this picture; instead of staring straight into his webcam, as so many others have during these Skype press conferences, Wiseman had his set up at an angle that made it look as if he were staring right at Mr. Peña, talking directly to him. A happy accident, but a good photo nonetheless.
