The Town

My main issue with Ben Affleck’s The Town, which opens this weekend, is the romantic subplot involving Affleck and Rebecca Hall. That aspect of the story just didn’t work for me, and actually steps on the otherwise involving and intense series of events. The film is a terrific crime drama, easily joining the ranks of other recent Boston-based thrillers such as The Departed or Mystic River. While not as dramatically immersive as those films, The Town is a well-directed and nicely-acted production. The climax of the film, a heist on Fenway Park that becomes a guns-blazing siege, is one of the best 30 minutes you’ll see from Hollywood all year. The sequence begins like this:
