"Adios" & "Bomb" Take Top Austin Fest Honors

Simón Saavedra’s “Adios Mundo Cruel” and Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel’s “Louder Than a Bomb” took top honors at the Austin Film Festival, winning Best Narrative Feature and Best Documentary Feature respectively. Set in the Chilean capital, Santiago, “Cruel,” written by Jack Zagha Kababie and Enrique Chmelnik, centers on Susana, who does city tours among “Prozac, Ritrobil and flirting smiles.”

In other nods, Best Narrative Short went to “Katrina’s Son,” while best documentary short went to Sean Mullen’s “Birthright.” The Austin Film Festival is among the selected film festivals accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in which award-winning narrative short and narrative student short films are also eligible for an Academy Award in the shorts category.

All awards were presented to the writers of the winning films on October 23rd during the Austin Film Festival Awards Luncheon. Winners received cash prizes ranging from $500 to $5,000, reimbursements for travel and lodging while at the festival.

Best Animated Short: “The Lost Thing” – Director: Shaun Tan
Best Narrative Student Short: “Down in Number 5” – Writer: Kim Spurlock
