Animal Kingdom Dominates Australian Film Awards

The Australian Film Institute Awards put David Michod’s Animal Kingdom at the top of its list with eighteen nominations, including Best Film. In that category the film will compete with Jeremy Sims’ Beneath Hill 60, Jane Campion’s Bright Star (eleven nominations), Rachel Perkins’ Bran Nue Dae, Julie Bertuccelli’s The Tree and Stuart Beattie’s Tomorrow, When the War Began.

In addition to Best Film and Member’s Choice Award, Animal Kingdom (which grossed just under $1 million at the U.S. box office and scored 96% on the Tomatometer) will compete for Best Director, Screenplay, Editing, Cinematography, Sound, Score, Production Design, Costume Design, Lead Actor (both James Frecheville and Ben Mendelsohn), Lead Actress (Jacki Weaver, who goes against Bright Star‘s Abbie Cornish), Supporting Actor (both Joel Edgerton and Guy Pearce), and Supporting Actress (Laura Wheelwright).

Stateside, Weaver is considered a strong Oscar contender for best supporting actress.
