Anne Thompson Named indieWIRE Editor at Large

Leading film journalist Anne Thompson is taking on a greater role at indieWIRE as the company enters a period of transition. The news is one of two important developments at iW this week. While Thompson will maintain her popular blog at indieWIRE, her new title — indieWIRE Editor-at-Large — formally recognizes a role she has unofficially served for some time at a moment that indieWIRE prepares to add additional new leadership soon.

Rick Allen, CEO of SnagFilms/indieWIRE also confirmed that Todd McCarthy is leaving his post as an indieWIRE blogger. Next month he’ll assume a new full-time position at The Hollywood Reporter. In making the announcements, Allen said that, “while we are most certainly happy for Todd’s good fortune, and wish him the best of luck, we are equally pleased to announce that Anne has been named Editor-at-Large.”

Thompson’s appointment is a natural fit for the indieWIRE staff. Her blog, Thompson on Hollywood, is a cornerstone of the Blog Network and she will continue leading TOH while assuming the additional editorial responsibilities here at indieWIRE. On a personal note, indieWIRE’s current editor-in-chief Eugene Hernandez and I have known Anne professionally since our early years at iW, and have been inspired by her work. We’re also happy to call her a friend and colleague.

While many who work in this business tout Thompson’s history with the trades and as a former editor at Premiere, not to mention her talented entrepreneurial voice at TOH, for us at indieWIRE – and her widespread readership – she’s a smart, honest, forceful, opinionated and consistent advocate for the art and business of cinema in America and beyond. The iW staff is looking forward to Anne continuing to cement her voice and inspiration on the film landscape while working with indieWIRE and the blog network as they evolve into their next phases.

Leonard Maltin, Peter Bogdanovich, Sydney Levine, Spout, Reverse Shot and our own Eric Kohn’s blog will continue to speak their independent voices alongside each other. And, looking ahead, another fantastic addition (and more) will join the indieWIRE Blog Network soon.

iW’s editorial team Peter Knegt, Nigel Smith, Bryce Renninger and Sophia Savage as well as our fantastic and loyal group of freelancers will continue covering the scope and ever-evolving independent film world. I couldn’t be more pleased and inspired by them. So, as evolution continues, we are excited for what’s to come of it as we stabilize our internal team and prepare to bring in a new leader soon.

This week’s announcements follow indieWIRE Editor-in-Chief Eugene Hernandez’s recent announcement that he is leaving his editorial role later this month after nearly fifteen years since co-founding this company. He’ll continue writing his blog on the iW Blog Network after joining the Film Society of Lincoln Center on November 1st.

“I believe in indieWIRE and am committed to its vital mission to support ‘filmmakers, biz, fans,'” said Anne Thompson, “a mission which continues under the direction of managing editor and ten-year indieWIRE vet Brian Brooks and his staff. Forbes has called indieWIRE the ‘online heartbeat of the world’s independent film community’ – I’m delighted to help that heart beat even stronger.”

“TOH has become a must-read among film industry insiders, the entertainment media and smart-house film fans worldwide,” added Rick Allen, “It has been a perfect addition to the indieWIRE Blog Network, and we are committed to the blog’s continued growth. In this additional role at IW, Anne will join us in the search for an editor-in-chief to build on indieWIRE’s strong DNA and help us chart our future growth.”

Brian Brooks is the Managing Editor of indieWIRE.
