Back to IndieWire

In the past couple of weeks, a lot has gone down at indieWIRE. First, Eugene Hernandez announced he would be stepping down from his role at indieWIRE for a deserved new gig at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Then, Todd McCarthy got hired as the chief film critic at The Hollywood Reporter, leaving his “Deep Focus” blog here at iW as a result. And now, it has been announced that Anne Thompson would be taking a new role as iW‘s Editor at Large. And while there are still many more developments to follow in the coming weeks, I figured this might be a good time to stop and take it in for a second.

I already waxed sentimental about Eugene’s departure, which is obviously the most emotional of the three announcements for me as Eugene has been such an amazing presence in iW-land since I arrived in it over four years ago. But with today’s announcement of Anne’s new role, and future announcements about other additions to the team, I must say that though I am very much sad to see Eugene go at the end of the month, I’m confident and excited in indieWIRE‘s future and my role in it. Ever since I met Anne Thompson a few Sundances ago, I’ve always marvelled at how on her game she is and have very much enjoyed her warm presence as a colleague since she joined the indieWIRE blog network a year or so back. I’m genuinely thrilled to have that presence expand and know its going to be a very good thing for all of us here.

Speaking of which, I should also briefly note my fellow indieWIRE-ers who are still on board the ship: Bryce Renninger and Nigel Smith are fantastic members of the editorial team who I’ve grown to significantly trust and admire; James Israel is an ad man to be reckoned with and has been a very good friend for years now; and like Eugene, Managing Editor Brian Brooks has been a huge part of the reason I’m privileged enough to be where I am right now – he’s a mentor, a friend, and a fabulous teammate and I’m not quite sure what I’d do without him.

So once again, I say onwards… You can’t do much about change other than embrace it and utilize it to grow. And that’s definitely the vibe in indieWIRE-land right now.
