Director Watch: Eastwood's Hoover without Phoenix, Julianne Moore Likes Her Helmers Silent

Hoover producer Rob Lorenz has already denied that Joaquin Phoenix would co-star with Leonardo DiCaprio in the biopic; now Clint Eastwood says it too. In fact, Eastwood didn’t even realize he was an option. “Didn’t he become a rapper?” was his response when addressing the rumor. (Not a good sign as WME’s Patrick Whitesell tries to rehabilitate Phoenix’s career.)

DiCaprio, however, is indeed signing up to play the late FBI chief. “It’s a great role for him,” said Eastwood, who grew up with Hoover as a prominent figure in pop and political culture, and wants to capture the mythology of the man:

“He was a very complex person. The homosexual aspect is just one of many. I would say that’s the least of his problems. But he was also very clever, whether rightfully or wrongfully, he was very clever about keeping himself in a certain position in life, so it is an interesting study.”

– U.K.’s Daily Telegraph profiles Oscar contender Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right) and tracks her life on film. The paper calls her “a character actor performing lead roles,” and declares that “the real Julianne Moore is free from actorly pretension.” Moore confesses: “People are always really surprised when they realize I’m not a very serious person, and that I’m not tremendously serious about acting. I don’t like to rehearse, I hate improv. Directors that don’t like to talk, they’re my favorite ones.”
