McCarthy Moves to THR; TOH Stays Put

Todd McCarthy is going to Janice Min’s new iteration of The Hollywood Reporter as their new lead film reviewer. I am happy for him. He’s a great critic, but making the adjustment from 30 years of working with a Variety support system to the independence of a blog was tough for him. I look forward to reading his THR reviews. Kirk Honeycutt, who has served as THR critic for decades, is being redefined as the trade’s international critic.

Meanwhile, TOH is staying put. I am doubling down on indieWIRE. As we prepare to bid farewell to site founder Eugene Hernandez, who starts his new gig as digital strategy director at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on November 1, I have committed to joining SnagFilms CEO Richard Allen in the search for the right editor-in-chief to build on indieWIRE’s strong DNA and potential for growth. I believe in indieWIRE and its vital mission to support ‘filmmakers, biz, fans,’ which will continue under managing editor and ten-year indieWIRE vet Brian Brooks and his staff. I look forward to helping to take indieWIRE into the future. UPDATE: Here’s IW’s announcement of my new role as indieWIRE’s editor at large.

“We were really glad to have been able to offer Todd an entrepreneurial home when he needed one,” says Allen, “but completely understand his desire to return to his roots with a publisher like The Hollywood Reporter, and we wish him well.”

“It was terrific to work with Todd this year in Cannes, Telluride and over the last few months,” says Hernandez. “I’m glad that indieWIRE could provide him a home in the wake of his departure from Variety and as he served on the selection committee at the New York Film Festival this past summer. Todd’s expressed a terrific, personal voice that has been exciting to read while he was with us at indieWIRE. The whole team here at iW wish him nothing but the best.”
