Media Watch: NYT Magazine Hires Ex-Employee Lindgren

Hugo Lindgren is an old cohort of former NYT Magazine editor Adam Moss–and followed him to New York Magazine before moving on to become executive editor of Bloomberg Businessweek.

Lindgren has won the job of editor of the NYT Mag partly, the NYT explains, because he used to be there:

We talked to a lot of great candidates, inside and outside of The Times, but Hugo stood out for his creativity, his charisma, and his experience helping to refresh two major magazines. Because he knows The Times Magazine from his earlier work there, he’ll be able to hit the ground running — on Oct. 25.

Although I have worked with Lindgren, who is indeed a charismatic and talented guy, the danger here is that familiarity breeds contempt. In other words, this does not sound like: ‘Hey we have a great brand new guy who is going to knock off the roof with his great soaring ideas.’ This is more like ‘don’t rock the boat, baby.’

A guy I know in NY publishing circles says that print jobs these days go to older established talent, while the new exciting stuff is happening online. I couldn’t agree more. (Check out indieWIRE’s redesign, btw.)
