Marketing for Danny Boyle‘s Aron Ralston survival story “127 Hours” looks to now be kicking into gear in preparation for the imminent November 5th theatrical release which will no doubt attract the attention of Oscar pundits all round.
Fox Searchlight have unveiled a new interactive website for the film with a handful of new images as well as beautiful photography of the Utah environment — presumably featuring work from the duo of cinematographers in Enrique Chediak and Anthony Dod Mantle — setting the scene for the isolating tale of Ralston’s struggle. The film debuted to critical acclaim at this year’s Telluride Film Festival and soon after at the Toronto International Film Festival where our own review described it as “deeply humane, rawly felt and astonishingly executed,” “lean, efficient, despairing, thrilling and ultimately life-affirming,” and simply, “one of the the best films of the year.”
James Franco leads the picture basically in a one-man show as the adventurer Ralston with his performance described by our review as “a lock for a nomination and easily a favorite to win it all” while the likes of Kate Mara and Amber Tamblyn also feature along with Clemence Poesy and Lizzy Caplan, who are seen here in the new photos for the first time. Of course, for those who don’t know, the story of Ralston sets off as he falls into a crevice and has his arm trapped under a boulder while canyoneering in Utah’s Blue John Canyon. Struggling to free himself with any equipment and having his supplies dwindling, Ralston faces the prospect of having to cutting off his own arm for survival. A prospect that later becomes a reality….
It definitely sounds like a cinematic experience that may cause a little unease, with reports from early screenings already noting people fainting during at the penultimate scene. Word of audience unrest began at Telluride where it was laughed off as altitude sickness by some, however, it’s now being reported that a screening of about 300 people apparently held by “Toy Story 3” director Lee Unkrich at Pixar‘s theater also required ambulance services after several audience members fainted. Surely the affected audience members are coming into the film with little more than, “from the director of ‘Slumdog Millionaire” on their mind? Another TIFF review chimed in noting that while “there’s an amazing amount of tension and anxiety that leads up to this moment,” the scene in question “honestly isn’t that bad.”
The first batch of television spots have also appeared online varying from footage already seen the trailer to new, extended clips. As we mentioned, “127 Hours” hits theaters on November 5th and is expected to feature heavily during the awards season.
