Oscar Watch: Sony Pictures Classics Sends First Screeners

Sony Pictures Classics marked yet another start of the awards season by sending out the first screeners–they will have many more to follow–of two films already in release, Rodrigo Garcia’s relationship drama Mother and Child, starring Annette Bening, Naomi Watts and Samuel L. Jackson, and David Michod’s Australian gangster drama Animal Kingdom, starring Jacki Weaver as the ultimate bad mom.

SPC, which probably will have more movies in awards contention this year than any other distributor (if you count docs and foreign films), is getting these two movies out ahead of the onslaught so that they will have more chance of being seen by guild and Oscar voters. Actors will weigh this excellent Bening performance against an even showier one in The Kids Are All Right, which will probably reap the benefits of both. And critics groups will likely reward Weaver, putting her into the fairly uncompetitive supporting actress race.

Here are my interviews with Michod, Cholodenko and Bening.
