Other Israel Film Festival Hosts U.S. Premiere Among Many Highlights This Year

The opening of the Speakeasy Cafe marks one of the many highlights leading up to the fourth annual Other Israel Film Festival, which takes place from November 11 – 21, in Manhattan. Located on Manhattan’s upper west side, the cafe will host conversations with Naomi Ragen, Benny Morris, Debra Winger and more during the run of the festival.

Kicking off the festival will be the U.S. premiere of the documentary “There Must Be Another Way,” which follows the Jewish-Arab duo NOA, who in 2009 made to a bid to represent Israel at the Eurovision contest, despite resistance from left and right following the military operation in Gaza.

Closing the festival will be another documentary, the recently HBO buy “Precious Life,” directed by Israeli broadcast journalist Shlomi Eldar. The film tracks a incidence when Israelis and Palestinians put aside their differences to save the live of four-month-old Palestinian Mohammad, who was born without an immune system and can only receive a life saving operation in an Israeli hospital.

Other highlights this year include a concert by renowned Israeli-Palestinian singer/songwriter Mira Awad and Jewish Israeli composter Tamar Muskai; a comprehensive exhibit of classic and modern Israeli movie posters; and a screening of selections from “Rechov Sumsum,” the Israeli version of “Sesame Street.”

“The films that we screen at the festival are meant to evoke discussion, and the Speakeasy Café will be home to exciting non-stop dialogue,” said Carole Zabar, founder of the festival in a statement. “In a time of increasing Islamophobia, our festival bridges gaps and promote tolerance.”

Isaac Zablocki, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the festival added in a statement, “This year the festival offers such a wide variety of options for our audience in terms of high profile screenings, special events and spotlights.”
