Screen Media Takes "Backyards" Ahead of Hamptons Fest

Screen Media Films has announced its acquisition of US distribution rights to Eric Mendelsohn’s “3 Backyards” on the eve of its showing at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Starring Embeth Davidtz, Edie Falco, Elias Koteas, and Rachel Resheff, the film explores the interior lives of three residents of the same suburban town over the course of one perfect autumn day. Screen Media will release the film in the first half of 2011.

“We are thrilled to be distributing this intelligent, thought provoking, and beautiful film,” Robert Baruc, President of Screen Media Films, said in a statement. “Working with Eric and his producing team is an added bonus.”

“For me, just getting to make a film — to play with shots and work with these incredible actors — would have been enough,” Eric Mendelsohn added. “But starting with Sundance and then New Directors, and now, to be working towards a theatrical release — it’s more than I could ask for.”

A Caruso-Mendelsohn Production in association with Fred Berner Films, 3 Backyards is written and directed by Mendelsohn and produced by Mendelsohn’s long-time producer Rocco Caruso, Amy Durning, and Mendelsohn with Fred Berner serving as Executive Producer. The film made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival where Mendelsohn became the first person to be awarded the Directing Prize twice (having received the same prize at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival for “Judy Berlin”).

The film also screened at Film Society of Lincoln Center and MoMA’s New Directors/New Films festival and had its international premiere at the 2010 Deauville Film Festival. The film will play this weekend at the Hamptons International Film Festival, where Mendelsohn was previously awarded the Golden Starfish, Best Feature, for “Judy Berlin.”

The deal was negotiated by Screen Media by Robert Baruc and David Fannon of Screen Media and Fred Berner, Rocco Caruso, and Liz Manne on behalf of the film.
