Do they never learn? Even after recent studio duds Prince of Persia and Max Payne, Sony Pictures has signed David O. Russell (Three Kings, The Fighter) to write and direct Columbia’s action-adventure Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. That’s because this franchise wannabe is based on a Sony PlayStation 3 game.
Naughty Dog’s hit 2007 game sold 2.6 million copies and spawned a sequel which in turn sold 3.8 million copies worldwide. But more often than not, hit games do not translate into hit movies, with few exceptions such as the low-budget niche titles Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat. Columbia co-president Matt Tolmach is betting on Russell to figure out a way to avoid churning out yet another forgettable B programmer:
David is a tremendous choice to take on this film. He’s equally adept at combining all the classic elements involved in this property: great character development, strong comedy, and amazing action sequences. He has a brilliant vision for this material and we know he will bring his original, unique voice to this adaptation.
