James Gunn‘s superhero parody, the appropriately titled “Super,” premiered last month at TIFFwhere it received some strong reviews and landed a distribution deal with IFC. While we didn’t get a chance to see it in our busy schedule, it’s a film we’ve been curious about and now we have our first real look at the film via a clip that debuted last night during the television broadcast of the Scream Awards.
The film tells the story of an average guy (Rainn Wilson) who transforms into pseudo-superhero The Crimson Bolt after his wife Sarah (Liv Tyler) leaves him for a smooth-talking drug dealer named Jacques (Kevin Bacon). Joined by sociopathic teen-turned-sidekick Libby (Ellen Page) the two begin to wage war on crime and plot to bring down Jacques. This clip of the film points to a much darker (though still funny) take on the material than we had anticipated. In the scene, Wilson deals with a douchebag who cuts in line at the movie theater and takes some extreme action to make his point. We liked the bit of Wilson changing into his low-rent costume in his beat-up car and the violence definitely doesn’t hold back on the blood.
Nathan Fillion and Linda Cardellini round out the cast and film will hit theaters next year. Check out the clip after the jump.
