'Zoolander' Set To Return In Series Of Animated Web Shorts

With “Zoolander 2” turned down by Paramount earlier this year in light of budgetary concerns, work continues on it with Justin Theroux revealing that he’s still tweaking the script that will (hopefully) see Will Ferrell return as the demented fashion designer Mugatu. But before we see a big screen return of Derek Zoolander, it looks like we’ll see him animated on our computer screens first.

Ben Stiller‘s Red Hour Films just inked a deal with Paramount Digital Entertainment for an animated “Zoolander” series and the live-action “Billy Glimmer: Entertainer Of The Century.”

In both series, Stiller will be providing voices for the lead characters, and he hopes to snare Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell to reprise their characters from the film in the series as well. As for ‘Billy Glimmer,’ it will follow Stiller as he plays “a mid-level voice impersonator out of Las Vegas” and presumably, hilarity will follow. The pilot for that series is already in the can; Jason Woliner is directing the series and Rob Huebel will also star. Both are veterans of the MTV sketch show, “Human Giant.”

As Stiller explains, the ability to work quick and cheap and get his ideas out there fast is the impetus behind the online venture. “It’s just a way to say, ‘Hey, let’s go do a couple of little five-minute episodes,’” Stiller said, “as opposed to saying, ‘Hey, let’s pitch it to the studio and then let’s have a fight over the budget for six months.’” Seems like a smart approach and a good way to workshop characters before risking them in a potential feature. We’re interested to see how these will turn out, but the ‘Billy Glimmer’ premise sort of reminds us of this scene from “Starsky & Hutch” (after the jump):
