A Tale of Two "Blue Valentine" Posters

A week after showing us “The King’s Speech”‘s embarrassingly bad one sheet, The Weinstein Company has attempted to redeem itself with the official theatrical poster for Derek Cianfrance’s Ryan Gosling-Michelle Williams drama “Blue Valentine,” which is out on December 31st:

Aesthetically it works quite well… Though I do question whether it’s – in a way – promoting the film as something it’s not. “A love story,” reads the tagline as Gosling and Williams entangle themselves in an ultra sexy embrace. Not to ruin anything, but that’s not “Blue Valentine” in a nutshell… In a way, yes, it’s a love story… but not in the way this poster’s image suggests. Frankly, I’m still all for the promotional poster they used at Sundance in the film’s pre-Weinstein days. Less literal, and quite beautiful, I fell in love with this poster and I think it remains the clear winner of the two:
