AFM Breaking News: FilmDistrict Acquires "Lockout"

In yet another deal at AFM, FilmDistrict continues its genre buying spree, acquiring all U.S. rights to sci-fi thriller Lockout, starring Guy Pearce (Memento) and Maggie Grace (Taken).

FilmDistrict, led by CEO Peter Schlessel and theatrical chief Bob Berney, also picked up action thriller Drive, starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan.

Ten-year-old EuropaCorp’s prolific Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) co-wrote Lockout with directors James Mather and Stephen St. Leger. Their script sends a falsely convicted ex-government agent (Pearce) on a mission to rescue the president’s daughter (Grace) at a prison outpost in outer space. Peter Stormare and Tom Hollander will co-star in the film set for an early 2011 production start. This sort of movie has genre elements and a solid producer behind it with sc-fi/action credentials. And EuropaCorp is grateful there’s a new distributor with a hunger to buy, says co-founder Pierre-Ange Le Pogam:

Luc and I, and everyone at EuropaCorp are thrilled there is a new and exciting distribution company in the US. We have great respect for Peter and the team, and this deal is about friendship and creativity. We are proud and excited to be a part of this new adventure, and we plan to deliver a unique film. We are looking forward to working with Peter, Bob and everyone at FilmDistrict. It will be fun.”

FilmDistrict chief Peter Schlessel closed the deal with Le Pogam.
