– Writer Jeffery Deaver’s The Bone Collector was made into a film back in 1999 starring Angelina Jolie and Denzel Washington. Now Ian Fleming Publications Ltd. has enlisted him to reinvent James Bond. Project X will be published in May and plot details are hush-hush, but Deaver did reveal to USA Today that the story “is set in the present day, in 2011. Bond is a young agent for the British secret service. He’s 29 or 30 years old, and he’s an Afghan war vet.” Deaver is picking up the story from where Fleming’s fourteen novels left off, not from the cinematic adaptations, he says: “I want to stay true to the original James Bond, who many people don’t know much about.” He acknowledges that while Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig have contributed to the Bond legacy, “the original Bond was [actually] a very dark, edgy character.” The first Bond, Connery, came closest to incarnating Fleming’s Cold War British spy.

Screenwriter Peter Morgan took a crack at a Bond treatment until the Writer’s Strike and financial problems at MGM intervened. In this TOH flip-cam interview, he wonders if Bond isn’t too enmeshed in the 60s, but hopes that director Sam Mendes will solve the Holy Grail and deliver a thinking man’s Bond:

– Cameron Crowe is trying to find the right actress for We Bought A Zoo, adapted from the Benjamin Mee memoir. Rachel McAdams, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson (according to Deadline’s sources she’s the top choice) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are in the running to play across from Matt Damon in the Crowe/Aline Brosh McKenna script.

– There are indeed three Snow White projects in the works. Relativity Media’s Snow White, which we now know will be directed by Tarsem Singh (The Fall), is written by Melisa Wallack and will be 3-D, is an edgy modern take on the fairy tale complete with seven dwarves and evil stepsister. Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman (slated for Christmas 2012) takes a different perspective (possibly with Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron in lead roles). And Disney has Snow White and the Seven in development, in which the dwarves are Shaolin monks. According to The Wrap, Relativity and Universal considered combining their projects but since the scripts are so different they’ll stay separate.
