I’ve been thinking a lot about a conversation I had the other night about the state of the independent film industry – yes, one of those (at least we didn’t pay for the ability to have that conversation). As much as we spitballed ideas, brainstormed, argued, complained, got hopeful, got negative, the same wall continued to rear it block our thought. Numbers. Nobody wants to be straight up on numbers. VOD, internet, DVD, what-have-you. Now, I’m not begrudging distributors and filmmakers their secrecy. Folks have no motivation to disclose the numbers. As long as they remain secret everyone can spin a film into a bigger success than it actually is. Good for all around… except for the industry as whole. We want to fix things, we need to look past the short game. But to do that we need new motivations. And for the life of me, I have no clue what those are.
