Oscar Talk: The Way Back, Hollywood Reporter Actress Round-Table

On this week’s Oscar Talk, Kris Tapley and I range over Peter Weir’s The Way Back, which I finally screened, as well as the crazy season which is now heating up. We beg to differ on DreamWorks’ Animation’s Megamind.

We look at the Oscar chances of the airbrushed actresses assembled on the cover (where are the thought balloons?) of new weekly glossy The Hollywood Reporter (video below). (THR managed to get Amy Adams, Annette Bening, Helena Bonham Carter, Nicole Kidman, Natalie Portman and Hilary Swank at the same table to talk about their experiences in an hour-long conversation on career choices, regrets, advice and balancing stardom with reality.)

Of these actresses only three are likely best actress nominees: Annette Bening, Nicole Kidman and Natalie Portman. Hilary Swank stars in a movie, Conviction, that is dying and no one wants to see. She’s great as Betty Anne Waters. But it’s tough: she’s won two Oscars for playing gritty working class heroines (Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby). And now she’s doing it again. That’s one reason why I think Sam Rockwell pops here–if anyone looks at the movie. Amy Adams (The Fighter) and Helena Bonham Carter (King’s Speech) will more likely get in as supporting actresses.

Oscar Talk is also available on iTunes.
