RIGHTS ROUNDUP AFM and including TIFF, Locarno et al. (Full Report & Updates Here)

The Rights Roundup shows rights acquired internationally, not just for U.S.

This is a document which will keep growing through AFM and then some. AFM’s “new” acquisitions are shown in bold face. All the International Sales Agents (ISAs) listed thus far (also will grow for AFM to approximately 400) were either in Toronto or had reported on rights sold in Cannes. The list will swell as AFM sales come in and will be updated with bold lettering., You can find it updated on a daily basis by clicking here. Here you can print out the entire document as well.

AFM had fewer films than last year in what Jonathan Wolfe calls a “market correction” as in previous markets there were decidely too many. There were also 8-9% fewer sales companies than last year and a 2% increase in companies attending, which includes a 20% jump in producers, film commissioners, festival programmers and screenwriters. The number of buyers was unchanged from last year. 24.56% of the attenddes were from Asia, 21.45% from North America and European Union attendees were 28.72%. I would say the market was slow but steady. Only one record breaking deal was reported on the last day with Fox acquiring Walking with Dinosaurs 3D from IM Global, but the top sales companies sold out and the Asian companies did very well, perhaps on the tail of Pusan. Presales were in abundance, and Harold Van Lier of Studio Canal said that 80% of his deals were presales and 1/3 of them were presales for the $30 million Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy whose budget is now fully financed with presales. The seminars were very well attended by the producers and screenwriters and this may present a growth area for IFTA. The intersection between creativity and business has not been fully explored.
