The 10 Biggest Surprises of the Spirit Award Nominations

The 10 Biggest Surprises of the Spirit Award Nominations

I’m in the midst of expanding on these 10 points for a bigger feature on indieWIRE, but here’s what I’m thinking with regard to the always surprising Spirit Award nominations, which were announced this morning.

1. No Ryan Gosling.

2. Little “Blue Valentine” love in general.

3. However, a lot of love for “Greenberg”

4. No Julianne Moore.

5. You clearly enjoyed “Rabbit Hole” (and rightfully so), so why snub it where it hurts?

6. The supporting female category in general is very surprising.

7. Foreign film hopefuls “Animal Kingdom,” “Carlos,” “I Am Love” (among others) get snubbed in favor of “The King’s Speech”?

8. Following the Academy’s lead by snubbing “The Oath”

9. No Robert Duvall.

10. Should “127 Hours” really be here?
