"The Way Back" Makes its Way to the Museum of Tolerance

Peter Weir’s long awaited “The Way Back” is set to open the first Museum of Tolerance International Film Festival (MOTIFF), on November 13 in Los Angeles, CA. The festival, whose motto is “Great stories are all around us,” runs from November 13 – 18.

Set to hit theaters on January 21, 2011 via Newmarket Films (with an Oscar-qualifying run to precede that), and based on Slavomir Rawciz’s novel “The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom,” Weir’s drama chronicles the escape of a small group of multi-national prisoners from a Siberian gulag in 1940. Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Jim Sturgess and Saoirse Ronan round out the large cast.

“We are proud that the Museum of Tolerance International Film Festival will open with ‘The Way Back,’ a timeless story of man’s eternal struggle for freedom,” said Rabbi Marvin Hier, Founding Director of the MOTIFF in a press release.

The night following the event’s kick-off, the MOTIFF Gala will honor Clint Eastwood with the festival’s first Tolerance Award. In celebration of the director’s achievements, MOTIFF will also present a special screening of “Gran Torino.”

Among the other films to screen over the course of MOTIFF are Nigel Cole’s “Made in Dagenham,” Alan Jacob’s “Down For Life,” Steven Silver’s “The Bang Bang Club,” and a special presentation of Kimberly Pierce’s “Boys Don’t Cry.”

“There is no better place for a film festival dedicated to human dignity and mutual respect than the Museum of Tolerance, where every day, people from diverse backgrounds and religions come to learn the consequences of man’s inhumanity to man and the desperate need for a more tolerant society,” added Hier. “Cinema leaves a lasting impression on its audiences and is a valuable way to instill the museum’s vision in a new audience.”
