Things to do in Denver

I just returned from four days of jury duty at the Starz Denver Film Festival. Having heard good stories about the fest for years, I’ve wanted to check it out for awhile now, and am very grateful to finally have the opportunity to do so. The pre-Sundance timing can be tough on a festival. Fortunately the folks at Denver do an amazing job of curating a diverse slate of films from the worlds of international and independent cinema. I’m going to stay mum on films (as part of the jury squad code of silence) except for saying that being able to meet Danny Boyle after seeing his great 127 Hours in an Opera House at a screening introduced by Aaron Ralston himself was an all time film festival highlight. Now, no mention of Denver is complete without referencing the late night lounge – hell, the lounge even makes it into the fest trailer. It’s genius! Filmmakers and other festival guests need a place to get together after official and unofficial parties. Usually different groups form at different bars creating a strangely scattered late night experience. In Denver everyone gets to relaxe and unwind together allowing a real festival community to develop. And they serve food, which is key after a long day of screenings… All in all, definitely an A+ experience. Thanks to all the wonderful staff for putting it together.
